Full Artist Biography of INGIA
Joyce German, known artistically as INGIA, is a South Sudanese Canadian vocalist and saxophonist renowned for her unique fusion of African influences with Jazz, R&B, Neo-Soul and Gospel. A rising star in Winnipeg’s music scene, she captivates audiences with her dynamic performances and original compositions.
In 2023, INGIA graduated from the Desautels Faculty of Music with a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies and has since gained recognition for her exceptional artistry. She is a recipient of several awards, including the Shearer Bursary, Corus Jazz Radio Scholarships, and the Desautels Faculty of Music Endowment Fund. She frequently collaborates with artists and bands across the city, showcasing her musicianship and versatility. Not only is she a skilled saxophonist, but her captivating voice sets her apart as a standout artist in the scene.
Beyond performance, INGIA has a passion for arts advocacy, with a strong focus on uplifting Black and underrepresented artists. She is the visionary behind HERitage, an event dedicated to creating space for Black & underrepresented women in the arts.
Under her stage name INGIA, which is also her middle name, INGIA as an acronym embodies the values, Intention, Nurture, Gratitude, Inspiration, and Amplify the guiding principles behind her music and artistic purpose. Through her work, she strives to nurture others, express gratitude, inspire change, and amplify African and Black American music and culture.
Her latest EP release entitled Genesis, represents a new chapter in her musical journey. Comprising five originals "White Nile (ض لینلا یبلأا An Nīl al Ābyaḍ)," "INGIA," "Resonance of Identity," "For Hawa," and “Home". The project blends Jazz, Afro-Fusion, Gospel, Neo-Soul and R&B, reflecting her journey of reconnecting with her roots while carving out her own artistic identity. At its core, Project Genesis came to be which is more than just music; it is a platform aimed at amplifying the struggles in South Sudan while inspiring representation and empowerment. The name Genesis from the bible ties to symbolizing new beginnings and endless possibilities.
